Long known as one of the Puget Sound region’s most sought after hip-hop and pop producers and engineers, Tacoma native DuWayne “DJ” Phinisey is now stepping out from behind the production boards and into the spotlight with Something New, his first release as a solo artist.
The new EP is a 6-song showcase of Phinisey’s soulful vocals, thoughtful songwriting, and dynamic production.

“It could actually be a love story about me finding this new passion and love for songwriting,” Phinisey says. “I feel like every new songwriter starts out reflecting on these sorts of fundamental concepts: I love you, I can’t stop thinking of you, I’m here for you, etc. These are my interpretations of those classic themes.”

One of Phinisey’s closest music partners is Billboard-charting singer and fiery live performer Vicci Martinez. Phinisey produced Martinez’s recently released album, I Am Vicci Martinez, and sings and plays keyboard in Martinez’s live band.

She has no doubts about how Something New will be received. “No limits. That best describes my experience working with Phinisey,” Martinez says. “Not only does he pull out limitless possibilities in the artist he records and produces, but his ability to connect and deliver world class music at such a young age brings much hope for the future of music!”

Something New was written and recorded during the same few months as I Am Vicci Martinez, but Phinisey says his project offers something much different than the grandiose soundscapes he produced for Martinez.

“I just needed a breather and the simplicity of these songs was it,” Phinisey says. “They are catchy, fun, flirty, sexy, and emotional. They’ll keep your head bobbing and your foot tapping. My hope is that this record will put people in a good, chill place.”
